match: essence of object
This project was aimed to create a visual communication about the deeper meaning of a match. A diverse array of design methods including online research, interviews, exploration with the physical object, creative writing, photography, and drawing were used to define the true meaning of a match and subsequently portray this visually.
A photo taken during the visual exploration of a match. Contrast was used to represent the dichotomous nature of a match-the fire it creates is essential for survival, yet can also be the source of destruction.
This image portrays the essential nature of a match against its representation of destruction. A match creates fire, a tool fundamental to human evolution and survival. The corn represents this evolution and reliance on fire for our sustenance. The match is placed next to the corn and superimposed over the sun, giving an illusion of the fire it creates. The background is a landscape affected by wildfire smoke, representative of the devastation fire can cause.
An alternative option for the final visual communication of the essence of a match. The progression of matches represents a lifecycle, while the earth made of ashes presents the end of it. The earth was created with charcoal ground up from burnt matches, arranged over an outline of the planet.
A connotative narrative written as an exploration of the deeper meaning of a match. This creative writing component was central to the connection between a match and a life cycle.
The final product. A match is the life cycle of our planet. Changes in climate are a concerning sign we are reaching the end of this lifecycle-if we don't take action now.
